Project Introduction

         Compared with the metal atoms, the size of hydrogen atom is much smaller, so they are very easy to spread from the gaps between the metal atoms to metal substrate, perform physical and chemical effect to the metal substrate, reduce the mechanical properties of metal substrate and cause cracks。

         The source of hydrogen can be divided into two kinds, inner hydrogen and outer hydrogen:

     (1) Inner hydrogen means that hydrogen element exist in materials before being used, and mainly introduced by smelting (water in the raw material), acid pickling (acid), electroplating (cathode hydrogen evolution), welding (not dry before welding), heat treatment (quenching etc.) and other processes.

      (2) Outer hydrogen or environmental hydrogen means that hydrogen element are absorbed when metals are in the process of use. For example, while metals are used in the environment containing H2, H2S and aqueous solution of hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen atoms generated by disintegration of H2 or H2S diffuse into components and samples.

        Under the action of hydrogen pressure, different level of the adjacent hydrogen bubble crack are interconnected to form internal cracks with ladder shape features, that is referred as hydrogen-induced cracking, and sometimes, cracks can extend to the metal surface. The occurrence of HIC also doesn’t need external stress, generally concerned with high density of large plane inclusions in steel or irregular microstructure caused by segregation of alloy elements in steels. Now hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) is widely used to describe this type of cracking, and adopted by NACE international organization.

   Sample requirements

       Size: 100mm long by 20mm wide.

        1) Thickness <30mm:parallelly sample three specimens as one set at the same product.

        2) 30mm≤ Thickness <88mm:three test specimens shall be staggered in the through-thickness direction as one set.

       3) Thickness ≥88mm: maximum test specimens shall be staggered in the through-thickness direction。
